iRunFar: UTMB men’s preview. D’haene, Thevenard, Tollefson, Walmsley…yikes!

No course markings, no fee, no medal, no aid stations…it’s a choose-your-route adventure in Utah Colorado! At the High Five 100, runners traverse 100ish miles with over 40k’ of vert in some of the most beautiful and unforgiving mountains in the lower 48. Prior to this year, only one woman had finished under the 48 hour cutoff…now there are four .

Hey, it’s only three miles, right? You mountain goats may want to check out this new race in Mammoth Lakes, California. Organized by none other than Tim Tollefson (who’s also running it), it climbs a ski run with over 2500′ of gain. Nice and chunky prize purse for the top runners.

Awesome: This British couple completed every Summer Olympics event–all 102 of them–in seventeen days. Running, javelin, artistic swimming, gymnastics…all of them! While no disrespect to these good people who were raising money for charity, I’d love to see a top athlete take a crack at it and see how they do.

ultrarunning Magazine: Check out Sarah’s report from the High Lonesome 100. Sounds like a gorgeous course with some stout competition this year!
My thoughts on RDs attempting gender/racial equity at races. First, it’s their race and they set the rules. I’ll respect the rules, show up, and cheer like crazy. But…in an attempt at “equity”, I believe they’re creating issues that will turn around and bite them. How long until someone demands equal representation of nonbinary runners? Or BIPOC runners? Certainly visually and/or physical disabled runners deserve equal representation, right? Why should those groups be discriminated against? Do you know how messy this will get?
And for what it’s worth, I’m fully supportive of races that cater to just one group of people. Women’s only race? Visually impaired race? Masters races? Gay race? Awesome. I totally get it and support it.
Listen, I understand trying to balance out the fields in races like Hardrock where there was a structural imbalance, but if a mixed race (ugh, that term) simply sells out fast? Open it up to everyone and fill the field with those who register first.
I’d love to hear your opinions on this, especially from those who (respectfully) disagree with me. And please remember to use your name in the comments. Thanks.

RIP: The late Gabe Grunewald’s younger sister Abby Anderson was struck by a drunk driver and killed while on a run earlier this week. I can’t imagine the level of grief her family must be feeling.

iRunFar/Little: Sabrina writes about the “Performance Enhancing Vices” and whether envy, prideand selfishness are net positives for competitive athletes. I always shied away from philosophy in college, but if I were going back in my time machine, I’d invite Sabrina along with me.

Great news! On Monday I shared a story about the Polish javelin thrower who was auctioning off her silver medal to help pay for a young boy’s surgery. Well, the sale went through, the boy’s surgery is nearly funded, and the winning bidder returned the medal to Ms Andrejczyk.

I was trying to contain my excitement, but to hell with it. ANTON IS RACING LEADVILLE IN THREE DAYS! ANTON IS RACING LEADVILLE IN THREE DAYS! ANTON IS RACING LEADVILLE IN THREE DAYS!
